The Full Story

Textile waste is one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges, while shelters and community organizations often face shortages of essential items. Step of Love addresses both by offering a sustainable solution rooted in reuse, collaboration, and action.

Step of Love transforms discarded hotel linens into meaningful resources that provide comfort, care, and connection for communities in need. Materials that would otherwise end up in landfills are thoughtfully upcycled into dog beds, blankets, toys, and creative kits that support both people and animals. This work brings together sustainability and community service in a practical, hands-on way.

The impact of Step of Love reaches a wide range of community partners, including animal shelters, pet guests in temporary housing, families experiencing housing insecurity, students, and local nonprofit organizations. By working closely with these partners, Step of Love ensures that donated items are used where they can have the greatest benefit.

Since beginning this effort, Step of Love has hosted 27 community upcycling events and diverted thousands of linens from the waste stream. These efforts have resulted in the creation and donation of more than 1,000 upcycled items, including flat sheets, fitted sheets, pillowcases, handmade dog toys, tie-dye sheet sets, and school arts-and-craft kits. Each item keeps usable materials out of landfills while meeting real community needs.
